Stephen R. Marder, MD
Saturday October 30, 2004
Presented by the MIRECC of the VA Desert-Pacific Healthcare Network,
Department of Veterans Affairs Employee Education System, and the UCSD Department
of Psychiatry in cooperation with the Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc.
and the VA Maryland Health Care System .
Objectives
At the conclusion of the program, participants will:
- Understand the relative effectiveness of pharmacological and psychosocial
interventions for promoting the recovery of patients with schizophrenia.
- Understand approaches for improving the physical health of patients
with schizophrenia.
Synopsis
The long-term treatment goals for schizophrenia should include preventing
psychotic relapse and improving the patient's quality of life. Both patients
and their families are dissatisfied when treatment programs focus only
on stabilizing the condition. Rather, there is a growing demand for treatment
programs that promote recovery. This goal is strongly supported by the
recent report of the President's New Freedom Commission which strongly
recommends treatment programs that are oriented toward recovery. This
talk will review strategies for integrating effective psychosocial treatments
with pharmacotherapy. It will also emphasize the importance of monitoring
physical health for patients with schizophrenia.
